Alex, do you see this ladel and this spoon for draining cabbage; this ladel came from that schooner-“Thomas and Calvert”, from Flat Island, Aunt Bette gave it to Jane. 

So here was a grandfather talking to his grandson telling him about a ladel and dramer that helped feed the men working on his father’s schooner that travelled from Flat Island down to Labrador. A ladel given from his sister to her niece. 

Before they were a spoon and a drainer and a picture of a boat, now they came to life – they have a history of place and a role and they create a connection – they bring character to the space
